Keynote Speakers
Emily May
Emily May, who launched Hollaback! at the age of 24 and became executive director at 29, will share her personal story of how she came to lead an international movement. She’ll talk about being told she was “too young”, that sexual harassment “didn’t matter” and “would never end” and learning how to do it anyway. Emily offers a bold new vision for a world without street harassment, and teaches that the elevation of all of our voices is the key to changing the world.
Dr. Marilyn K. Howard
Dr. Howard, Humanities professor at Columbus State Community College specializing in American Civilization and African American History , will speak on the history of sexual and intimate partner violence in America, the reaction of social media and the criminal justice system to that violence, changing views of the problem and how the lack of social justice in this particular area exacerbates this issue.
Leah Aldridge
Leah Aldridge, an expert in youth violence prevention and consultant who has worked with a number of violence prevention organizations, including Peace Over Violence in Los Angeles, will explore the application of a social justice approach to sexual and domestic violence prevention work, and make the case for why sexual and domestic violence prevention programs benefit from using such an approach.
Stephanie Trilling
Stephanie Trilling of the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center’s “Be Safe” project, will address some of the benefits and challenges to working with young people around social media. The overarching goal of the presentation will be for audience members to examine their own beliefs and behaviors around using social media to engage youth in a responsible and effective way.
Scenarios, USA
Scenarios USA is a leader in creating socially conscious films developed by youth. Their latest film “Speechless” deals with sexual assault experienced by a male survivor. We will be joined by the films creator, Roxanne Lasker- Hall, and the organizer of the social media campaign that supports the film, Erin Fisher. This presentation will demonstrate the intersection of social justice and social media.
