Health Begins Where We Live, Work and Play!
All Ohioans do not have the opportunity to make the choices that allow them to live a long, healthy life because of their income, education, or ethnic background. This results in certain groups experiencing more disease, disability, and death, which is costly but preventable. The Ohio Department of Health has devised a way to address this problem through the agency’s grant-making process.
This online webinar will help educate prevention specialists on how to incorporate health equity and disparities concepts throughout the life cycle of a grant. The benefits and importance of understanding / identifying the root causes of health disparities are:
- Participants will learn basic health equity deductive reasoning skills to understand and identify causes of health disparities;
- Participants will learn to distinguish between health disparity, health equity and social determinants of health to strengthen proposed program interventions;
- Participants will better understand the link between primary prevention and health equity; and
- Learn about the availability of tools, RFP planning protocols and resources to address health inequalities.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Robyn believes that Health Begins Where we Live, Learn, Work and Play. As the Assistant Health Equity Coordinator for the Ohio Department of Health, Robyn works across the department and disciplines to discuss health equity promotion strategies. Robyn works with her colleagues to make sure that Health Disparities are addressed during planning, implementation, and program review. Health is so much more than just visiting a provider’s office, but health begins with the social conditions to which people live and breathe. Robyn has been in public service for 15 years, beginning her state service as a social worker with the Magellan Sex Offender Program at the North Central Correctional Institution in Marion, Ohio in 1997. While working at NCCI, Robyn also developed general population educational modules as well surrounding STD and HIV infection. Robyn is a graduate of the Ohio State University and has worked at the Ohio Department of Health since 2004.
