Help Us Stand With Survivors During COVID-19

Sexual violence was a huge problem before COVID-19, and that doesn’t change during a pandemic. Actually, we are seeing more risk-factors during stay-at-home orders and changes in work-places as well as additional barriers to access of services. Survivors need our support. They are still experiencing harm and trauma; and they’re often being retraumatized due to loss of privacy, sheltering in place with a person who harmed them, and more.

During COVID-19, OAESV has worked to mitigate these changes in order to continue providing essential legal services as well as support, training, and technical assistance to member agencies who are on the front lines. And, internally, OAESV intentionally implemented additional supports for our own staff to ensure health and safety while fulfilling the mission of our organization. Here’s some of the work we’ve done to support survivors and continue prevention efforts during COVID-19:

  • Facilitated meetings—called “Cultivating Conversations in Crisis”—with advocates, preventionists, program directors, and people of color in the field to hold space for their needs, emotions, questions, and concerns as their work and lives shifted
  • Provided additional specialized technical assistance to support programs as they figure out staffing, social distancing, and managing the re-opening of their physical locations
  • Held one of only a few virtual Advocacy Day events (the first in Ohio), where over 120 people joined us in hearing from legislators and keynote speakers, meeting directly with Ohio’s lawmakers, and advocating for the budgetary and legal needs of survivors
  • Produced a video to supplement virtual hospital advocacy services, in an effort to support survivors who go to the ER and may not have access to an advocate in person, as they normally would
  • Created flyers with no-touch QR codes and distributed to local programs for placements at grocery stores, as a reminder that services are still available and to show the process to access those services
  • Used our social media platforms to raise awareness of availability of services, to lift up our followers, to provide hope, to share necessary information, and to acknowledge the ways that systemic oppression intersects with COVID-19
  • Developed over five resources for service providers and community members, to guide them in providing support during this time
  • Facilitated three self-care webinars to support member agencies and community members

Survivors will continue to need services, and the advocates standing with them will continue to need our support. Join us in this work by making a donation.
