OAESV Recognizes Recent Discussions on Sexual Violence and Asks for Community Support

Several issues have come to light recently in Ohio and around the country. Perhaps most notably, we heard about the rape of children by adults, the abuse of students and athletes at OSU at the hands of doctors, and many other accounts of sexual violence. The Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence needs your support in addressing these issues.

Many survivors are unable to speak out or report their assaults due to fear, shame, embarrassment, and numerous other reasons. When they do speak out, it’s likely that the statute of limitations on those crimes has run out, that they will be ignored or accused of lying, or that the criminal legal system will fail to actually provide them with justice. Additionally, our legislators continue to strip away access to healthcare, including reproductive healthcare, that survivors deserve as part of their healing.

At the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, we demand comprehensive solutions to these problems. As communities, we need to ask for an end to the statute of limitations. We need to ensure there are support services that can help survivors, including reproductive services. We need to hold people and institutions accountable for their failures to help victims. And we need to continue to raise awareness around these issues and around prevention of sexual violence, which involves learning more about consent and ending rape culture as a whole.

We call on you all to take action because we know you care about the safety and well-being of others. Here are a few things you can do:

1. Attend our First Friday Legislative Update on 6/7 to hear from our staff about what you can do. Register here to receive the call-in information: http://bit.ly/FFCallJune

2. Use the resources available online and in your communities to learn more about these issues and how you can help (our social media accounts as well as NSVRC.org are great places to start).

3. Ask your legislators to write and support legislation that supports these solutions.

4. Have conversations about these issues and the possible solutions with your family and friends.

5. And please support us and your local rape crisis programs in the work we do. We need your voices, your votes, your time, and your donations if you can spare them.

We all deserve to be safe and healthy, and if we become victims, we deserve to be heard, to be believed, and to be supported in our healing. As we continue our work in ensuring comprehensive responses and rape crisis services for survivors and empowering communities to prevent sexual violence, we are so happy to have you right there doing that work with us.
